Bayde began to hit his knees, exhausted from his journey back home. Letting out a thick breath despite the crisp air around him. He began to strip pieces of his armor and weapons off of him. Once he was done, he dropped his head back a moment, closed his eyes, and took in and let out another deep breath. Once he opened his eyes, he was looking right up the nose of his new friend. “Yeah yeah I know… You’re probably thirsty. We’ll get you something soon. I promise.”
Understanding, it sauntered off beside him. Bayde sat back up straight, and mindlessly took his sword out of it’s sheath. He held the blade up, admiring it’s shine in some places and dinginess in others. After a few minutes passed, his eyes fixated on the brush in front of him as his thoughts went to his discovery of treason within the counsel. The Elven King; Ori’Ziya’s father, was running him around from one kingdom to the next. His orders were always something like “Smooth this over with them,” “Make them understand,” or “Find out….” Some of the situations Bayde was put into were complex and almost incomprehensible. Although he was no longer human, he was still the same man he was before. Bayde knew how to be loyal, dependable…. And wary.
Ori was keeping his new home up for him while he was away. Bayde wouldn’t allow himself a moment to admit that he liked the thought. To him it was purely sensible. Looking to his right he watched the rare unicorn grazing quietly. That was an interesting story; how he acquired the unicorn. Bayde was about halfway through his journey home when a light whirring turned into a loud buzz as a band of unseelie fairies worked to trap Bayde on the road. He honestly thought he was about to be served up as the main course of the evening. His hands and arms were wound tight against him as he was roped with course and thorned vines. When he stopped struggling, out of breath from trying to snap the vines and break free, he looked up to find wide-eyed fairies looking past him and backing away. Then, suddenly, a cold, very wet…… nibble to his ear. Bayde tried not to look surprised, since it was obviously attacker repellent at the moment, and calmly, he had turned to face a gorgeous white unicorn. Needless to say, the fairies revered him and set him free. Getting the unicorn to follow him home in front of them so they wouldn’t tie him up again though was another story.
Breaking his reverie, Bayde stood up and slid his sword back into it’s sheath. Clucking for the animal to come to him, he petted it’s long face and smiled. Turning towards the hill he was pretty sure he saw some movement…. That had to be Ori.
He began to walk towards the hill, and just as they crested over, he caught her white hair and gown against the bright white snow. Smiling as he saw her look up, and smile at him and the unicorn. Ori looked only a moment at Bayde before turning her attention to the animal and asked, laughing, “What have you got here?”
Getting up from the ground, she walked towards them and the unicorn whinnied and stomped it’s hoof when she reached up to pet the animal’s face. Being an elf, Ori wasn’t one to usually show too much emotion, but Bayde swore her eyes lit up and was enjoying the smile on her lips. Just as she began to ask, “How did you –,” he cut her off, realizing she would begin to question his visit too.
“A rare mount for one who is equally as rare.” Giving her one of his smiles, he nodded up at the unicorn, “Hop on. Let’s go home.”
The unicorn nodded its head as though it understood, and Ori mounted up. “Bayde,” she began to say. “You shouldn’t go back to Court. Not yet. You don’t have many friends there.”
He sighed to himself, quietly, his face thankfully turned away from her as he led them both home. He chose not to respond… He simply didn’t have the words yet. In usual Ori’Ziya fashion though, him not answering didn’t deter her, and she pressed on. “There have been whispers of treasonous acts and making you take the blame!”
Heading back over the hill, their home appeared, and Bayde finally stopped walking and offered Ori his hand to help her down. He was quiet until he told the unicorn to go on, patting it’s rear end. He watched the animal trot off to graze again before he turned back to Ori.
“You don’t get to where I am without making a few enemies, Ori’Ziya.” His tone was strong and sure. Looking down a moment, he took her hands into his, then looked back into her eyes. Although he was home, he had a self-appointed mission now. To reassure her, and despite not knowing everything, to not give her more to worry about. “I made it back, just as I said I would.”
“You should stay here. Lay low for a while.” Ori suggested. “Let me see what else I can discover.”
Bayde shook his head and pressed his lips together. That wasn’t an option for him. “I’m a solider. I do not cower. Not before anyone.”
They both knew that her father would expect him back at court in a day or two to discuss what happened on the excursion. He heard her sigh, and then set her jaw. It was his turn to look at her quizzically, but if he pressed, she’d reciprocate right now.
Bayde simply nodded at her, and said, “I have a plan.”
